Below is a guide to the credentials designations you will find attached to the individuals contained in the list:
| CAPF | (Certified Applied Poetry Therapist): bachelor's degree or higher; 440-hour training program with a credentialed mentor/supervisor |
| CPT* | (Certified Poetry Therapist): has the same credential as above, but received the designation CPT before the creation of the CAPF category in 2006. Unlicensed individuals using the CPT designation do so at their own discretion, in accordance with their state laws. |
| CPT | (Certified Poetry Therapist): master's degree or higher in a mental health field, plus licensure. 440-hour training program with a credentialed mentor/supervisor. |
| PTR | (Registered Poetry Therapist): master's degree or higher in a mental health field, plus licensure. 975-hour training program with a credentialed mentor/supervisor. |
| M/SC | (Mentor/supervisor candidate): certification in poetry therapy; currently in a mentor/supervisor training program with master mentor/supervisors. |
| M/S | (Mentor/supervisor): credential to train (CAPF M/Ss are credentialed to train CAPFs only) |
| MM/S | (Master mentor/supervisor): These mentor/supervisors are recognized by the Federation for their extensive experience and contributions to the field of poetry therapy and are authorized to train M/SCs. |
